WHO WE ARE

A community foundation for the whole valley.

RIVIC is a nonprofit community foundation based in the western slope, Colorado. We don't run a single program — we create, fund, and steward the places and partnerships where generations meet, beginning with the Intergenerational Confluence.

why we exist

Four problems,

or one?

Across the Grand Valley, older adults are aging in isolation. Students who don't fit a traditional classroom are falling through. Foster and kinship families are carrying enormous weight with thin support. Adults ready to work need training that starts sooner than a two-year degree.

These get treated as four separate problems, addressed by four sets of professionals, in four different buildings, on four different funding streams. That structure is efficient on a spreadsheet and quietly wasteful in practice — because a great deal of what each group needs, another group already has.

RIVIC exists to close that distance. We build the conditions in which a retired welder and a seventeen-year-old end up in the same room, and both leave better off.

HOW WE WORK

Our foundation's job is to make things possible.

Our mission names three instruments — places, programs, and partnerships. Each initiative RIVIC takes on uses all three.

PLACES

We find and revive buildings and grounds the community already owns a memory of, and shape them into spaces designed for gathering rather than sorting.

PROGRAMS

We design and operate services — care, learning, family support, training — that are built from the start to overlap rather than run in parallel.

PARTNERSHIPS

We convene the organizations already doing this work well, and add capacity instead of duplicating it. We would rather host a good program than reinvent one.

CONNECTION

No one in our care should go a day without being spoken to by name. We design so that generations cross paths by default, not by appointment.

CAPABILITY

People arrive with something to build on. Our work adds skill, confidence, and independence — for a seventeen-year-old and an eighty-seven-year-old alike.

CONTRIBUTION

Everyone has something to give, including the people usually cast as recipients. We build real roles, not activities, so contribution flows both directions.

OUR FIRST INITIATIVE

IN DEVELOPMENT

The Intergenerational Confluence

What if we brought back to life, a school that has closed its doors, as a single campus where elder care, alternative education, foster family support, and workforce training share one space — deliberately.

A middle school is built for gathering: wide corridors, a commercial kitchen, a gym, a library, rooms sized for twenty-five people to work on something together.

When it closed, the valley lost one of the few buildings designed from the ground up to hold a crowd. Putting five services back inside it is not a cost-saving measure. The shared walls are the program.

Small-group learning for students who need a different structure, with adults nearby who have lived what they're studying

Backup for the families saying yes

Respite, resources, and community for foster and kinship families, so that saying "yes" stays sustainable.

WORKFORCE

Skills that start Monday

Short-cycle training built with Grand Valley employers, taught in part by people who did the work for forty years.

A nature school on the grounds

The Confluence is the first thing we build, not the last.

RIVIC was structured as a foundation on purpose. Once the model works in one building, it should be repeatable — in another town, at another scale, with another set of partners.
