Confluence Academy

A small, learner-driven school for ages 8–18 in Western Colorado, where young people build real things, run real enterprises, and contribute to the community they live in.

Learners will not simply prepare for life. They will practice meaningful life now.

who we are

RIVIC Foundation is a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening communities by creating places, programs, and partnerships that bring people together.

From supporting local families and older adults to investing in public spaces, the arts, and community initiatives, we believe every generation has something to offer — and everyone deserves a place to belong.

Capability is contagious.

The Academy combines rigorous mastery of core academics with Socratic dialogue, apprenticeships, entrepreneurship, nature immersion, practical life skills, and real contribution to the community.

Mornings are a focused academic block using individualized, mastery-based learning. The rest of the day belongs to long, protected stretches of project work — quests, capability projects, enterprises, apprenticeships, and community problem-solving.

Guides coach rather than lecture. They ask powerful questions, protect the culture, and connect learners to challenges and mentors. Mixed-age mentoring, learner-created agreements, peer feedback, and public exhibitions do the rest.

A complement, not a competitor.

The Academy is not designed to replace or compete with the district. It is intentionally small, and built to be observed, shared, and learned from. Educators are welcome to visit, observe, and adapt what fits.

Dive deeper

in practice

Learners run their own day.

Each learner designs a plan to meet expectations, then executes it — with the accountability that comes from peers, guides, and public exhibition of the work.

They cook what they eat

Learners prepare and participate in their own daily food creation. Much of it is grown on site. No outside food is brought in.

They teach what they know

Learners plan and reserve rooms in the building to teach skills they're passionate about to others.

They run an economy

A learner-driven internal economy teaches budgeting, resource management, delayed gratification, and real-world decision-making. Want to use the 3D printer? Calculate the filament, determine the cost, earn it.

They speak in public

Communication, leadership, and entrepreneurial skills — creating, sharing, marketing, and selling their own work.

They take learning home

Each learner brings a chosen piece of the day back into their home kitchen that evening, to cook and connect with parents.

They use AI on purpose

Learners are taught to use AI deliberately and critically — so that it doesn't use them.

Learners build useful things, solve authentic problems, and see their work matter to other people.

Cob pizza ovens

Designed and built as community gifts and demonstrations of capability.

Animal habitats

Design, animal care, biology, measurement, budgeting, and responsibility in one project.

Learner-led coffee shop

Operated by learners, with a mobile coffee trailer to follow.

Food preservation

A freeze dryer opens up nutrition, product development, enterprise, and emergency preparation.

Prototyping & repair

3D printing for invention, design, repair, and learner-created products.

Gardens & apothecary

Growing food, cooking daily meals, herbalism, and natural apothecary practices.

Happening now : during a local pond invasion, learners are using the scientific method to determine the most effective way to live-trap muskrats. Current data indicates a preference for apple slices with almond butter over peanut butter.

Enterprise here has a purpose. Proceeds from the coffee shop and trailer are set aside for something larger than the learners who earn them — and what that becomes will be theirs to decide.

Early ideas include a group trip abroad with elders invited along, a community project, or seed capital for the next learner-led business. Whichever they choose, the deciding is itself a multi-year exercise in planning, budgeting, communication, persistence, and collective stewardship.

The commitment

This is not a passive educational model — families join a culture and help hold it.

Connection labs

Ongoing behavior and connection-based learning for parents alongside their children.

Raising capable children

Allowing appropriate discomfort, encouraging accountability, and resisting the urge to over-rescue.

Screen-free evenings

Consistent screen-free weekday evenings, co-created across the whole community.

Shared meals

Child-led meal preparation at home each weeknight, carrying the day's learning into the kitchen.

Community contribution

Every family commits to meaningful contribution beyond their own child — and chooses the form that fits them.

Why it matters

When parents are aligned with the mission and deeply participate, they become fierce engagers and defenders of the model. Children who watch their parents engaged in purposeful community care develop perspective and a natural inclination to give back.

Contribution

How families contribute

Families choose how they contribute. The paths differ in commitment and in training, and each is supported and coordinated rather than left to good intentions.

Respite for foster families

For families who feel called and are suited to it: certified training that qualifies a parent to provide approved respite care.

Elder companionship

Consistent time with elders on campus — conversation, shared meals, projects, and presence.

Teaching a skill

A trade, a craft, a language, an instrument — taught to learners in a scheduled block.

Campus work

Grounds, gardens, kitchen, repairs, and the ordinary labour that keeps a place running.

Mentoring

Standing alongside a learner through a capability project, enterprise, or apprenticeship.

Professional expertise

Skills a family already has — legal, medical, financial, technical — offered to the campus.

On foster-family support

Nearly one in two new foster homes closes in the first year, often from burnout and lack of support. Trained, approved respite is one of the few things that reliably helps — and it is work that must be chosen freely, screened properly, and matched with care. Enrollment at the Academy is never conditional on it, and no family's participation is described as earning anything. Foster-family support remains central to RIVIC's mission through Circle of Care, whatever any individual family chooses.
